E05 - Weathering the Storm: Resilient Design Strategies for Senior Living (Room Meeting Room 14)

29 Aug 21
9:45 AM - 10:45 AM

Tracks: Planning + Design

Senior living communities provide a sense of permanence and longevity. However, that permanence can be routinely and sometimes dramatically challenged by natural or man-made disasters—for example, the COVID-19 pandemic completely disrupted our way of life. Weather-related events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding can compromise or destroy buildings in an instant. Protecting facilities, and more importantly the health, safety, and welfare of residents and staff, is paramount. This session highlights a new movement called “resilient building design” and will highlight building design and strategies that can more successfully adapt to changing conditions and can more readily absorb and recover from adverse events.
