2021 Environments for Aging

E09 - Creating Home for Seniors Living with Cognitive and Behavioral Health Impairments (Room Meeting Room 13)

While there has been an increase in memory care design strategies, very little covers the full spectrum of cognitive impairment and behavioral health. Those living with these challenges greatly depend on the culture around them. This presentation will offer candid perspectives based on the presenters’ research and experiences in designing and supporting environments for cognitive and behavioral health impaired residents. Discussing case studies (including the Byron Health Center’s 170-resident home), best practices, and guiding principles, participants will understand how to create home environments that promote and reinforce the strengths and abilities of all residents through research principles applied to design.
