Underwater archaeology, while still a relatively young discipline in comparison to its terrestrial counterpart, plays an outsized role in the energy sector. Exploration and development activities by the oil and gas industry and installation by the renewables sector are driving archaeological discoveries around the globe. Despite the oil and gas market downturn of the past few years, archaeologists working along the Gulf Coast in the energy sector continue to discover new sites and address compliance issues for their clients. This is broad look at the role marine archaeologists play in the offshore energy sector, and at some of our recent deepwater discoveries.
