Prevent Incidents Before They Happen: Prevention through Design (Room 31 A)

20 Sep 22

Tracks: Hazard Identification & Prioritization

Workplace safety incidents have devastating impacts on employee health, undermine confidence in safety programs and result in annual costs of $171 billion in the United States, according to a 2019 National Safety Council estimate. But most organizations still react to individual injuries rather than follow a prevention-based strategy. In this session, we’ll review the key elements of proactive, risk-based safety management, using the framework of the NIOSH initiative Prevention through Design (PtD) to reduce or eliminate risks at the source. We’ll also discuss the importance of a dynamic perspective that tracks the ways risks in one area of operations affect risks in others, and participate in interactive exercises to identify risks in different scenarios.
