Identification and Discard of Defective Billet at Time of Generation (Room 316)

17 May 22
4:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Tracks: Continuous Casting

LD1 supplies billets to long rolling mills and the total salable long products is dependent on LD1. Any interruption in billet caster or supply of defective billet to mills impacts the final product volume. A double-pour billet, which is difficult to identify and discard, generates cobble at mills, impacting its production and damage to equipment. On average, 24 such cases are reported annually. One such billet stops mills for a minimum of 1 hour. In the present work, a system was developed to identify an invisible defect at the time of its generation and its separation during the casting process itself.
