Slab surface defects may result in issues during processing steps (e.g., rolling) or in-service failure. Since human visual inspections are often not possible, and a small number of both false-positive and false-negative detections are required to maximize productivity, Danieli recently developed the “mixed 2D + 3D detection technology” concept. Leveraging laser sectioning technology, it allows precise and high-resolution surface topography (3D information), while a high-resolution 2D image is obtained via laser reflectance information. 3D information, 2D image, machine vision algorithms and machine learning techniques are the solution for high sensitivity and low false-positive performance on slab defect detections.
