In 2019, Baosteel contracted Danieli to upgrade their 4-strand continuous casting machine dynamic soft reduction (DSR) system, designed to process 320 x 425-mm blooms, with new 250-ton modules, replacing the last five 140-ton ones to prevent segregation and ensure high product quality. The Q-SOFT on-line process control software — based on the Liquid Pool Control real-time solidification model for product solid fraction map calculation along the caster — was also developed to provide DSR setpoints even during non-steady conditions. The results are used to calculate every module’s correct thickness reduction. This paper describes the results and performances achieved during commissioning phase, which concluded in May 2021.
