Applicability of CO2-Neutral Induction Furnaces for Long Rolling Operations (Room 407)

About 20% of the steel industry's CO2 emissions are attributable to kiln processes. Therefore, steel producers aim for solutions to reduce CO2 from gas-fired reheating furnaces. Compared to non-fossil fuels, direct electrical heating by induction offers significant efficiency benefits. Examples will point out seamless integration and transition for the following examples: 1. Hybrid heating with gas and induction. 2. (Partial) hot charge by endless combination of casting and rolling. 3. Inductive reheating from cold charge. The paper will focus on comparing flexibility, energy and cost efficiency, as well as system and layout integration for today's hybrid and future all-electric processes.
