Phrases like sustainability; corporate responsibility; and environmental, social and governance (ESG) have worked their way into stakeholders’ vocabularies in recent years, forcing industry to follow suit. To showcase their efforts, many companies participate in voluntary benchmarking reports. While these reports generally allow the reporter to use “best available data,” that freedom can complicate the data collection and reporting process. This presentation will share lessons learned from CDP and the World Steel Associaton reporting for steel manufacturers. Best practices to process extremely broad and sometimes conflicting raw data, develop a versatile database, and document the process to allow for manageable review will be discussed.
