A Statistical Approach to Understand and Control of BOF Slopping by Using Dynamic Model and Process Measurements (Room 318)

Slopping or slag foaming is a critical operational issue in basic oxygen steelmaking steelmaking that adversely affects productivity and yield and can lead to environmental pollutions. In the current study, a new method in which the process measurements are combined with dynamic model predictions to analyze conditions during 90 seconds before slopping event is presented. Dynamic parameters related to slag foaminess such as slag properties, slag amount, CO gas formation rate and hot metal temperature were analyzed and compared with non-slopping heats. This approach showed a good correspondence with plant practice and blow patterns are adapted to reduce the slopping events.
