Numerical Modeling of Hydrogen Application in a Reheating Furnace (Room 407)

The current practice in the steel industry is to use methane as fuel in reheat furnaces. The combustion of methane generates greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. There is a need for research into alternative fuels to be used in reheat furnaces to reduce greenhouse. This study investigates how using hydrogen as fuel in a reheat furnace impacts flame pattern, slab heating profile, heat flux into slab, scale thickness, slab thermal stress, and carbon and NOx emissions. The computational fluid dynamics simulations used in this study provide insights into the use of hydrogen as fuel in reheat furnaces.
