In September 2019, Gerdau Long Steel North America decided to implement Linde’s CoJet technology in their electric arc furnaces (EAFs) at its Midlothian plant. The main objective to pursue this change was to reduce power consumption, increase productivity and reduce maintenance time by considering the non-water-cooled CoJet injectors. Gerdau Long Steel North America Midlothian Mill operates two EAFs. As a first step, all sidewall lances were replaced in EAF A with CoJet injectors. After evaluating performance of running with CoJets for about one year, the company decided to convert the EAF B to a CoJet system as well. This paper will present the performance benefits and results achieved.
