Best Practices to Reduce the Iron and Steel Industry’s CO2 Emissions by 2030 (Room 407)

Steelmaking is a carbon-intensive activity, and breakthrough technologies are being developed to address the steel industry’s aspirations for carbon neutrality by 2050. As the industry pursues the goal of sustainable steelmaking, more efficient operation of existing infrastructure will be critical to achieving the emissions reductions targets set by national and international policy initiatives in the near term. Valuable lessons can be learned from the industry’s top performers, and these best practices can be readily applied to existing basic oxygen furnace/blast furnace or direct reduced iron/electric arc furnace operations. This paper provides an overview of the currently available decarbonization efforts and the optimal strategy for reducing emissions.
