Innovative Electrode Consumption Reduction Program to Inhibit Oxidation and Advance ESG Initiatives (Room 406)

ChemTreat, working with the Steel Dynamics Inc. - Engineered Bar Products Division (SDI EBPD), has deployed a new state-of-the-art electrode consumption reduction technology. The technology utilizes existing meltshop infrastructure and novel technology to reduce electrode oxidation during the melting process. Based on the collaboration between SDI EBPD and ChemTreat, the facility was able to realize reduced electrode costs, improved furnace optimization and increased environmental sustainability. This paper outlines the typical melting process that may increase electrode oxidation, general strategies employed, results obtained, and the future efforts that SDI EBPD/ChemTreat will deploy moving forward to further reduce electrode oxidation losses and greenhouse gas production.
