The flow within a tundish is of critical importance for a caster. For a multi-strand caster tundish in particular, the differences between the strands could lead to product quality variations and other concerns. A complete cycle of a ladle exchange process is studied using transient computational fluid dynamics analysis. Steady state, tundish drain and refill during ladle exchange, and eventual attainment of steady state are all studied. Different impact pots are studied for a comparison of their influence on the differences between the strands.
