Studying the Flow and Thermal Dynamics in a Small Single-Strand Tundish (Room 309)

The flow within a tundish is of critical importance for a caster. Unfavorable flow and thermal conditions can lead to poor quality, disruptions and even termination of cast. The flow and thermal dynamics within a small single-strand tundish are studied using computation fluid dynamics analysis. Some unusual and interesting dynamics were observed with a potential for temperature-related disruptions. Modifications to the tundish furniture were investigated, showing promising improvements to the temperature distribution. The analysis included steady-state and transient ladle exchange scenarios.
