Thermodynamic Simulations to Predict the Susceptibility of the Inclusion Formation in Steel Production Process

The prediction of non-metallic inclusions formation during the production of high-strength steels (HSS) has been widely studied nowadays. The present work aimed to use Thermocalc® software to predict inclusion compositions formed during cooling and solidification of steel after the secondary refining process. The liquid inclusion window obtained has shown if liquid inclusions would form during the cooling. For evaluating metal cleanliness, samples collected from a steelmaking plant had their level of inclusions measured by the Automated Steel Cleanliness Analysis Tool (ASCAT) and some correlations were made. Results has shown a complex interaction between aluminum, sulfur and calcium.
