Use of Video Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence for Billet Length Measuring System (Room 315)

Steel Melting Shop #1 (LD1) of Tata Steel Jamshedpur produces continuous cast billets of different length. Billets produced at the caster are continuously cut as per the customer requirement and fed into the furnace, which is affected by the length of the billets. Short billets can sag and damage the furnace, while long billets can damage the furnace wall. This paper presents the use of video image-based system to substitute a conventional encoder-based system having accuracy of +/- 20 mm with respect to aim length, which has significantly improved yield at the mill and rejection of billets, which in turn impacts the bottom line of the company.
