Blast furnace campaign life is often limited by excessive wear of carbonaceous hearth refractory. Charging titanium-containing ores has been seen to extend the hearth life, likely due to Ti(C,N) skull formation. Though industry has well-established charging practices for remediation and prevention, the dissolution of graphite into molten Fe has not been measured when the liquid contains Ti(C,N). The dissolution of graphite into molten baths of Fe-C, Fe-C-Ti, and Fe-C-Ti-N will be presented, along with proposed mechanisms by which Ti(C,N) protects graphite.
