A self-flow MgO-C castable was conceived to be delivered as a ready-to-use product. Some challenges were overcome such as the development of a very low-viscosity binder, grain size distribution to avoid segregation, fast curing time, and a new sort of dispersant. Hot repair is performed at any temperature of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) bricks and applied by throwing a super sac or a bag directly to the damage area. Trials were conducted at steel shops and the performance was similar to the resin-bonded material, but with zero fume and non-pollutant emission. After installation, the BOF converter is ready to resume operation in 30-45 minutes.
