Lower costs, increased productivity and yield, reduced emissions, and maintaining safety are key drivers for all electric arc furnace (EAF) operations. The recent installation of a NextGen® hybrid laser/extractive offgas system together with i EAF® process control software at Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) - Engineered Bar Products Division has demonstrated significant reductions in electrical and chemical energy, electrode consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. The offgas system also improved safety by early detection of numerous actual EAF water leaks and by monitoring downstream flammability using CO, H2 and O2 downstream analysis. This paper will focus on confirmed operational and safety benefits realized at the facility.
