Steel Dynamics authorized a strategy to increase production of value-added products at its Columbus Division with a new #3 continuous galvanizing line (CGL) and extensive upgrades to #1 CGL. To support this strategy, existing continuous pickle-tandem cold mill (PLTCM) complex capability had to be upgraded. This upgrade was carried out in steps, with minimal interruptions to ongoing production. Innovative techniques were used for design, equipment choice, installation, and commissioning of the new entry-end and state-of-the-art laser welder. With the use of strict safety and health protocols, the PLTCM upgrade was completed successfully without any OSHA recordable injuries or COVID-19 infections.
