For a quantum increase in production of value-added products at Columbus, Steel Dynamics Inc.'s board authorized a modern #3 continuous galvanizing line (CGL) for producing 400,000 tons per year of galvanized and Type 1 aluminized products (up to 72 inches wide and 0.012-0.157 inch thick). The line was designed for ease of operation and maintenance, fast payback, and a built-in flexibility for future upgrades. The #3 CGL produced its first prime coil on 9 July 2020, 19 months after issuing contracts. There were no recordable injuries or COVID-19 infections. The line has performed well — exceeding its design capacity 8 months after the start-up.
