Development of High-Toughness Steel Plates for Offshore Pipelines (Room 402)

Large-diameter pipes applied in offshore transportation lines have special toughness requirements due to the elevated internal and external pressures associated with deep sea environments. In this scenario, the plate fabrication becomes very challenging, as it must ally high thickness with elevated tensile strength and toughness, demanding specific process controls. This work shows technical aspects of the steel design in terms of chemical composition and rolling practices to assure high toughness at low temperatures. Mechanical characterizations were performed by tensile tests, Charpy, drop weight tear testing, crack tip opening displacement and correlation with microstructural features.
