This paper follows a strategy to eliminate the need of humans and steering of the hot strip mill as the first camber-free rolling technology was implemented in the hot mill at SSAB Borlänge, Sweden. Camber in strip is considered the most important source of cobbles in the finishing mill and root cause for steering corrections and control. Results show tremendous improvement that can be achieved by this technology. These results will be presented as well as future steps to ultimately eliminate permanent human interventions for hot sheet rolling paving the path toward lights-out operation.
