The onset of hot tearing in X70, Cr-Ni-Mo and Fe-Mn-Al steels was evaluated using controlled deformation testing (CDT). The CDT device consisted of a cylindrical phenolic resin-bonded sand mold with an electrical cylinder that was computer controlled to apply a tensile force to the steel shell during solidification. Solidification structure and strain rates were controlled to mimic the continuous casting process. Sulfur prints and macroetching of the resulting castings were used to identify hot tearing and evaluate the solidification structure. Resulting hot tears and microsegregation were evaluated utilizing scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.
