The New Age of HBI (Room 308)

Direct reduction offers a tremendous emission reduction compared to prevailing ironmaking processes. The decarburization pressure will increase the demand for pig iron and hot briquetted iron (HBI). Due to the avoidance of re-oxidation and reduced fines generation, HBI is the preferred way for a merchant material. It can be produced at locations with low-cost energy and raw materials available and shipped without certain precautions. This paper talks about HBI benefits and market, and new plants recently started up or contracted (e.g., Mikhailovsky HBI with a planned start-up in 2024). The main technical features of this plant and other upcoming HBI plants are described.
