Steel Dynamics Inc.'s more than 9 million tons/year of sheet steel production from its Columbus, Butler and Sinton electric arc furnaces serve appliance, automotive, construction, HVAC, energy, agriculture and service center markets with hot rolled, cold rolled, pickled, galvanized, GalvalumeĀ®, aluminized, and painted products. The company successfully produces advanced products with low residuals, particularly low copper, by using an optimized mix of prime scrap, hot briquetted iron (HBI) and pig iron. This presentation will cover production experience at the Columbus mill in using 10-30% pig iron and 3-10% HBI in the charge mix and will also cover design features in the new Sinton mill for increased use of HBI.
