The electric arc furnace (EAF) utilizes mainly electric energy to melt scraps. Exposed electric arc to the freeboard can significantly heat furnace wall, resulting in overheating issues. This study is concentrated on slag foaming phenomenon and related wall temperature distribution. A calculator is developed to calculate slag foaming parameters for a computational fluid dynamics model to predict the sidewall temperature distribution of an EAF and this model has been validated by plant data. The developed model can help to predict the risk of overheating from given electrode conditions and slag compositions.
