Cr Plating Alternative for Improved Surface Reliability on Cold Rolling Mill Work Rolls (Room 307)

The use of Cr plating as a means of providing low-cost wear protection on industrial components goes back nearly 100 years. However, recent environmental legislation, and an ever-increasing awareness of the environmental impact of this process, is putting pressure on industry to seek "greener" alternatives. This paper will detail the recent adoption of a thermally sprayed coating (HVAF-applied WC/Co/Cr) as an alternative to Cr plating for the protection of a known surface finish on cold rolling mill work rolls. This paper will also compare performance and reliability, based on two years of commercial use in service.
