Two commonly used commercial software packages for liquid steel processing calculations are Thermo-Calc and FactSage. Each makes equilibrium calculations with Gibbs energy models of phases, e.g., liquid metal for steel and liquid oxide for slag. New developments and database updates in these packages motivated examination of their predictions relevant to steelmaking processes. These updates include revisions to the Gibbs energy models of both the liquid metal and liquid oxide phases. In this work, predictions from both software packages related to slag/metal equilibria in the ladle and vacuum refining processes were made and compared to some available plant and laboratory data.
