Steel workers strive for safety. However, innocent ignorance is real: we don’t know what we can't sense. Anticipation is one risk mitigation practice, but fundamentally humans and, in particular, equipment are not aware of what can’t be sensed.
Technology has recently enabled enhanced situational awareness for equipment and applicable human operators. Machine vision (MV) classifies an array of technologies enabling machines to sense their surroundings and react to reduce risk. This non-commercial, practical paper will provide an overview of two MV technologies that enhance plant safety: (1) 3D spatial sensors and (2) artificial intelligence monitoring of video.
