Titanium Nitride Nucleation and Growth During Steel Solidification (Room 309)

Titanium nitride is an unavoidable yet potentially dangerous inclusion in several types of industrially produced steel. These hard inclusions can grow to be large and have sharp edges. Inclusions with these properties can concentrate stress and propagate cracks in steel, hampering mechanical properties. This work investigated TiN inclusions in lollipops, slab crops, and samples remelted under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Lower solidification rates produced larger TiN, but substantial differences were observed between remelted and plant samples despite similar cooling rates. Results were connected to the mechanisms governing the TiN growth, which must be understood to ensure steel cleanliness.
