The influence of microstructure on the mechanical properties of steel has been well studied and reported in the literature. In most cases, microstructural constituents can be simply identified using optical microscopy or scanning electron microscopy. However, for steels produced using thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP) technology, especially for bainitic and complex phase steels, it’s extremely difficult to distinguish microstructure types. In this study, microhardness measurements were used to identify microstructural constituents for carbon steels produced using TMCP technology. This method could be conveniently utilized in production environment for fast and reliable in-line quality control.
