Turn-Up and Turn Down Analysis at Roughing Mill Vertical Scalebreaker (Room 306)

This work identifies origins and corrective actions of slab turn-up issues at the roughing mill vertical scalebreaker. Most past turn-up analysis was made in horizontal rolling conditions but very few in vertical conditions. Simulations can reproduce turn-ups observed on the industrial line and identify corrective actions: a drastic decrease of turn-up was obtained by changing the passline height. Roll edger misalignment was identified to be another possible source of turn-up. The analysis is concluded by defining geometrical tolerances to avoid/mitigate turn-ups.
