This paper will share technical information regarding the conversion of an existing 34.5kV/480V ungrounded (IT) system to a grounded (TN) system in a hot strip mill. During normal operations, ungrounded (IT) systems have demonstrated increased failures and systems errors for variable frequency drive and motor controllers compared to grounded systems. A properly grounded electrical system can reduce the error and failure rates of equipment, but also allow for a safer environment for persons should an electrical fault occur. Results obtained include an analysis of the protection system reliability and power quality both before and after the change from ungrounded to grounded.
