Smooth Cold Rolling of AHSS Steels by Microstructure Conditioning of Hot Rolled Coils (Room 310)

Thickness oscillations recorded during cold rolling at tandem mill of HCT980X were so severe to lead thickness out of required tolerances on cold rolled coils ends. Advanced metallurgical characterizations highlighted the presence of a different microstructure - with presence of martensite - on both hot rolled coils ends, in comparison with the coil body. Countermeasures were implemented for what concern the run-out-table cooling pattern and the coiling parameters. Results confirmed that implemented modifications prevented the formation of hard phases keeping unchanging the chemical composition of hot rolled coil and all downstream processing conditions together with final product mechanical properties.
