The SWRCH22A 6.5-mm wire rod, delivered by HBIS Chengsteel, sometimes showed unsatisfactory performances in terms of productivity and rejection rate during the production of the hex-washer self-drilling screw. Extensive metallurgical investigations have been performed to identify the causes of surface defects and premature breakages during the cold drawing process. The work demonstrated that surface defects were associated with unsteady casting conditions while the poor cold drawability and premature breakages were induced by dynamic strain aging. This paper describes the investigations made and countermeasures that have been adopted to improve wire rod production for specific cold heading applications.
