Commencing and Improving the Production of IF Steel Slabs at Chengsteel, HBIS (Room 316)

The starting situation at the beginning of the project consisted in short IF casting sequences mostly with the replacement of the submerged-entry nozzle (SEN) during or after each heat, due to clogging by alumina inclusions with consequent slab downgrade. After completing the project, the 2-strand continuous caster was able to cast, mostly replacing the SEN once, the maximum number of IF steel heats per sequence that the steelmaking cycle could supply. This paper describes the investigations made and countermeasures adopted for lengthening IF casting sequences and strongly increasing the ratio of slabs suitable for exposed automotive applications.
