In steel mills, storage and buffering functions are often isolated manual operations and there is no overall control of the material flows. Capital tied to raw materials and intermediate products is excessive. Automated material handling systems integrated to production processes could achieve maximum efficiency with shortened lead times, best transition planning, real-time tracking, and full traceability and accurate sorting and shipping of products with the best return on investment. This paper discusses the building blocks of digital and modern plant logistics with benefits of automation in plant logistics.
