Hydrogen Production and Supply Methods for Decarbonizing Iron and Steel Making (Room 407)

As the steel industry makes strides towards decarbonizing iron and steel production, use of low and no carbon hydrogen along with carbon capture from off-gas streams will be essential to this effort. Hydrogen can be used to decarbonize ironmaking by replacing carbon as a reductant and to decarbonize steelmaking by replacing natural gas as a fuel. In the next several years, producing, storing, and supplying hydrogen with low carbon intensity at large scales (> 100s MT/day) and capturing carbon dioxide will be key in supporting these decarbonizing efforts for the steel industry. This presentation will inform about the existing production and supply modes for hydrogen, including how they are being decarbonized to produce low and no carbon hydrogen at scale, and what other technologies are available for gas separation and carbon capture.
