The ability to accurately estimate the cost of production may be the difference between success and failure in today’s competitive manufacturing landscape. Estimating the cost of a job, or service, requires a firm understanding of the part, the production history, the time to produce, and the associated costs of labor and materials. Accurately identifying the associated costs ensures that each production order adheres to the business model and margin for the company. For decades, manufacturing has survived using tribal knowledge, pen and paper, spreadsheets, and printed documents to quote business. These slow and archaic methods may have worked in the past, but they will not succeed in the future. This is where technology comes in and streamlines the calculation of job costing and estimating.
