2026 NSC Safety Summit

Transforming SIF Prevention: From Classification and Metric to Risk Prioritization and AI-Enabled Engagement (Room 341)

Preventing Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs) requires more than compliance or traditional lagging metrics such as TRIR. Effective SIF Prevention demands an integrated system that focuses organizational attention on high-consequence risks and ensures that critical safeguards are identified, verified, and continuously improved.

This session presents a practical, systems-based approach to SIF Prevention by integrating the core principles of the four SIF-focused ASTM standards within the NSC Serious Incident and Fatality (SIF) Prevention Model. Participants will learn how SIF classification, pSIF identification, risk prioritization, safeguard verification, and leader–employee engagement operate together as a single operating framework embedded into daily work and business processes.

The session begins with a concise, scenario-based overview of SIF injury, illness, and incident classification, aligning participants on the four classification levels (SIFs, Priority Incidents, Regulatory Cases, and pSIFs), and demonstrating how accurate classification drives learning, leading indicators, and risk-focused and prioritized decisions. Participants will then explore how organizations move beyond TRIR by linking classification data to risk insights, safeguard performance indicators, and engagement-based learning reviews.

Building on this foundation, the NSC SIF Prevention Model’s Plan-Do-Check-Act framework is applied to real-world operations, illustrating how organizations assess capacity, identify high-consequence hazards, prioritize SIF risks, implement and verify critical safeguards, and drive continuous improvement.

The session concludes with a demonstration of AI-enabled tools that strengthen engagement and execution. Using a free, mobile Safe Work Plan tool aligned with the NSC SIF Prevention Risk Assessment Model, participants will see how AI-supported engagement and prioritization tool helps teams identify SIF hazards, prioritize risks, and improve safeguard quality most importantly by elevating meaningful conversations among workers, supervisors, and contractors before work begins.

Participants will leave with a clear, actionable roadmap and a full toolbox for implementing SIF Prevention as an integrated system that measurably reduces serious risk while strengthening trust, learning, and operational performance.
