This session explores school safety through the lens of crisis communication and community trust, emphasizing how leadership messaging shapes public perception during critical incidents. While physical security, threat assessment, student well-being, emergency preparedness and operational response all play important roles, the focus is on how these elements influence what families and communities ultimately believe during a crisis. Participants will examine governance-level questions school boards and superintendents should consider before, during and after safety incidents, including message authorization, speed and accuracy of communication and alignment with law enforcement partners. Real-world scenarios will highlight common breakdowns and effective practices. Attendees will leave with practical frameworks to strengthen trust, improve communication consistency and lead more confidently when schools are under pressure.
