Freedom of speech is an essential right. After all, it is in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. However, this right is not absolute. The limits of freedom of speech in a school setting have been established by decades of case law regarding student and employee speech. School officials need to keep informed about the most recent cases in order to apply this legal framework to modern issues. This presentation will begin with a discussion of the background law and recent legal trends. Then, attendees will have the opportunity to apply these developments through a guided discussion of hypothetical, but true-to-life, scenarios involving speech by students and employees.
