This session explores an innovative approach to superintendent hiring in a time of leadership shortages. Faced with a limited candidate pool, the district selected a promising but unlicensed candidate with strong leadership potential. To ensure success, the board simultaneously engaged a licensed, experienced superintendent to serve as a mentor throughout the licensure process. Presenters will share the rationale, structure, challenges and outcomes of this model, including governance considerations and lessons learned. Attendees will gain practical insights into balancing compliance, capacity-building and continuity while developing future leaders through creative, strategic partnerships and supportive mentorship structures.
