Optimizing Data Centers
Optical networks are a crucial part of modern data centers and AI factories. The question facing the data center industry is which transceiver technology will deliver the lowest power and cost per bit? New transceiver technologies like co-packaged optics and linear pluggable optics will introduce new opportunities and challenges for data center professionals. While IEEE Ethernet writes new standards for higher speeds, other groups are creating new application standards which may impact the physical cable plant. This lecture will give attendees an overview of current transceiver technology and terminology. Attendees will then learn about what to expect with data rates of 800G, 1.6T and beyond. The cost and power of different transceiver technologies and where they are used in front-end, scale-up, scale-out, and scale-across networks. Finally, the impact that transceiver technology has on the fiber cable plant will be discussed.
