Corrosion control programs in drinking water systems have traditionally focused on water chemistry and pipe material stability. While these factors remain critical, biological activity within the distribution system can also play a significant role in accelerating corrosion and disrupting treatment performance. Recognizing the interaction between chemistry, infrastructure, and microbiological activity is becoming increasingly important for utilities working to maintain compliance and protect system assets. Biological Corrosion (MIC) often reveals itself through common distribution system indicators such as rapid disinfectant residual loss, black or reddish slime formation, elevated iron or manganese levels, taste and odor complaints, and inconsistent corrosion control results. Many distribution system challenges that utilities have historically struggled to explain, can now be better identified through a clearer understanding of biological activity and biofilm behavior.
