Microplastics pose an emerging challenge for water utilities, with gaps between research and practical application. This discussion focuses on actionable monitoring metrics, key analytical uncertainties, and the effectiveness of treatment processes—including conventional treatment, membrane processes, and ion exchange—along with co benefits such as turbidity, TOC, and PFAS removal. It also addresses risk assessment in the absence of regulatory standards, communicating uncertainty to the public, and opportunities for utility–research collaboration to better manage microplastics and other emerging contaminants.
