All public water systems need an emergency response plan to satisfy the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Some systems need to submit Risk and Resiliency Assessments to become AWIA compliant. While each system is unique, there are many common aspects. To streamline the process of assessing risks and developing a plan to mitigate those risks, WARWS staff modified several existing templates to create an AWIA compliant Risk Assessment and Emergency Response Plan template. This template follows the guidance set out in AWIA 2018 and is appropriate for systems larger and smaller than 3,300 population. The staff developed the template, then trained each other to create a consistent straightforward document and planning process. The goal of this template is not only to meet SDWA requirements but have meaningful conversations with operators and decision makers as well as foster emergency planning and preparedness.
